But this apocalyptic battle begins as the product of a sinister marriage of draconian politics, corporate greed and the Faustian bargain hidden within promises of "security." BBC America has asked previewers to reveal as few specifics about it as possible. At that point, which was days before Thanksgiving, I hadn't yet seen "Revolution of the Daleks," so when Barrowman observed, "Everything always seems to relate to what's happening in 'Doctor Who' to what's happening in society," there was no way to know how true that observation turned out to be. Barrowman is beloved among sci-fi fans in general and Whovians in particular, and based upon the expressive excitement the actor exuded during a Zoom interview he conducted from his Palm Springs home the feeling is more than mutual. ![]() That affection doesn't end with The Doctor. So that's the other little naughty side to it." But she also uses him as a guilty pleasure, and Jack's quite happy with that. "It's almost like Jack's like a guilty pleasure, I think, to The Doctor, because although there was a period where she didn't like him, as one of the previous carnations, she has come to love him in a sense. "Sometimes Jack comes back because Jack – if I may be so blunt, not that I'm an advocate – but Jack is the gunslinger that The Doctor can rely on to do some of the dirty work," Barrowman told Salon in a recent conversation. On the flipside, hope for salvation also arrives in the form of Whovian favorite Captain Jack Harkness, the dashing timeline-tripping rogue played by John Barrowman. Soon enough their loneliness takes a back seat to the much larger threat involving the discovery of yet another insidious Dalek plan. This separation has taken its toll on each of them, some more than others. In the meantime Thirteen's loyal "fam" Yaz (Mandip Gill), Ryan (Tosin Cole) and Graham (Bradley Walsh) have been waiting for her on Earth with no word of where she's gone or when she's coming back. ![]() ![]() This grimness is separate from the Thirteenth Doctor's current conundrum, by the way – when last we saw Thirteen (Jodie Whittaker), she was being locked away in an intergalactic prison with slim to no chance of escape. The three stories I disliked the most were, “Girl Who Got Rattled,” “Meal Ticket,” and “The Mortal Remains.” I disliked them because the plot was slow moving and there was a lack of a comedic break. This is one of the better stories in the film. This is shown when the miner first arrives and the animals and fish disperse, but then when he leaves they all come back like nothing happens. The events that play out after he wakes up make it look like it will be a typical redemption story where the bandit changes his ways, but then out of nowhere it adds a twist with dark humor on the side. The next story is “Pan-Shot.” The story starts when a bank robbery goes wrong and the robber gets knocked out. The ending sets a serious tone for the rest of the stories by preparing the viewer for unexpected twists. It’s one of three songs from this story alone and they are all worth listening to on their own.Īll three songs play really well into the story: “Cool Water” introduces Buster Scruggs’s character “Surly Joe” shows his true nature and skill and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” is a somber, slow song that wraps the story up very well, complementing the surprise ending. Starting with the guitar makes the movie stand out from other westerns because not many can make unique music that has a modern feel to a western tone. It starts with the song “Cool Water” sung by actor Tim Blake Nelson, who also plays the guitar. This story is one of the best in this anthology, with its mixture of catchy songs and comedic timing. The first short story, like the movie itself, is called “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and it’s about a gunslinger who is wanted and on the run but also has a guitar and a sweet voice. This Netflix original was nominated for two Academy awards and was directed by Ethan and Joel Coen, who also directed “No Country For Old Men.” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is a must-watch because it incorporates six great stories into one movie, and the reader gets both a comedy and a serious story all in the same sitting. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is a modern take on the game’s style. Once you memorize this pattern, it will make a lot of sense when we move to the next exercise. Pretty simple stuff right? That is the entire E major scale up to the next octave, the 12th fret. Both ways will have you playing to a beat, and hearing the individual notes in a song context. If you are using a looper pedal, then just play an E major chord to the metronome, and let it loop. If you are using a backing track to play this scale, look for E major. For instance, let’s consider the E major scale starting on the OPEN 6th string: To memorize the major scale, start by learning the pattern on a single string. The major scale forms the foundation of Western music and serves as the basis for many other scales and chords. But don’t worry, I promise this will only hurt for a minute! Memorizing guitar scales are “entry level” music theory lessons. Some people associate the major scale with “happy” sounds, and that can be true as well.īut if we are going to get into memorizing guitar scales, we need to get just a little bit academic. It can make an easy melody sound very memorable. The major scale has a powerful, uplifting sound that is easy to hear in your head. Other classic movies also use the major scale, like “Back To The Future” and “Indiana Jones”. The major scale is used in many them songs for this reason, especially by John Williams who did the Star Wars soundtrack. When we think about the major scale, we think “big, bombastic, and triumphant”. That way, you are playing the scales to a beat, and you can hear how the sounds/individual notes work with chords. PRO TIP: If you don’t want memorizing scales to be boring, then put on a backing track or use a looper pedal with a metronome. ![]() So, grab your guitar, and let’s dive into the exciting world of scales! In this comprehensive guide, we will explore various methods that will help you memorize the major and minor scales on the guitar. Whether you’re a beginner or an intermediate player, understanding scales opens up a world of possibilities for improvisation, composition, and overall musicality. Learning and memorizing scales is a fundamental aspect of becoming a proficient guitarist. You’ll also start to see how individual notes make up the chords you probably already know! Once you get the patterns down, then it really starts to make sense how the fretboard works. Memorizing guitar scales doesn’t have to be hard, or boring. Trust me, I made the mistake of skipping beginner scales and had to go back and relearn what I missed! That’s great, but you are missing some important fundamentals if you skip the major and minor scales. Some guitarists get away with using the Pentatonic, and the extensions of that scale. We call it that in music lessons, because the Pentatonic Scale forms a “box” pattern on the fretboard. While this is a quick shortcut to playing Blues-inspired solos, it also gets a beginner guitarist into “staying in the box”. In fact, many guitarists skip the fundamentals and go right to the Pentatonic Scale. It can be a total slog when you are building up to the “good” part, and playing solos of your own. The unfortunate part of memorizing guitar scales is it is often looked at as being a little… boring. pretty soon, the fretboard really starts to open up, and the guitar makes sense. Scales break down the individual notes that make chords and triads, which is essential to understand, as it is basic music theory. Learning scales is not just for playing solos, however. After you master chords though, it is probably time to start memorizing guitar scales. That’s why guitar is such a great instrument, you can learn a few chords and immediately play a song or two. ![]() Most guitarists learn chords, and memorize chord shapes first. It was another year or two before I would finally get a guitar myself, but it was worth the wait. Later on, it was Slash from Guns N’ Roses that had me transfixed to the screen, as he played in the desert for the music video for “November Rain”. I had no idea what band I was watching, but I knew that the sound of the guitar was totally hypnotizing. The song was dark and brooding, but then the guitar solo started. It was the solo for “Comfortably Numb” on MTV, from the Pink Floyd live show “Pulse”. That defining moment that has given me 30 years of learning enjoyment. Maybe it was just the idea of the guitar itself for others, but I can remember the exact moment that I decided I would be a guitarist. Given the Series VI is the last production model and that the Series V and IV (apparently) only differ in cosmetic fashion, I was happy to have the “latest” 901 version to test. Funny side story: he was going to send the Series IV he owned but had issues when it came time to refoam them so he sourced a very good condition pair of Series V’s and shipped them to me. Long story short, a fellow forum member of AudioScienceReview was kind enough to send me his pair of Bose 901 Series V speakers. Additionally, with the gaining popularity of the CEA/CTA-2034 method of providing a complete set of measurements and a prediction for in-room performance based on Floyd Toole’s work, I couldn’t stop wondering not only how the 901 would sound to me but also how they would fare in the CTA-2034 standard set of curves. However, there are no measurements that replicate anechoic data. There have been some who have provided measurements of these speakers ( NoAudiophile did here). Some despise them and everything they represent from the company to the product performance and how it colors (no pun intended) listeners’ perception of what good sound is supposed to be. ![]() I was born in 1982 and until this week I had never heard the Bose 901 speakers. Although, one can make the case that the SPL is simply adjusted by +6dB for this proximity and transition from the standard 4-pi reference to a 2-pi reference (free space vs near-wall). And, at this point, I do not know how to manipulate the data in a way to “trick” the Spinorama graphics in to showing what would happen when you place them in the manner they were designed to be placed. The “Spinorama” data does not take this into account. I have attached an image below but to summarize: The speakers should be placed at least 18 inches from side walls (with a recommendation of 2-4 feet from side walls) and 8-16 inches from the rear wall. Some may be concerned that this “Spinorama” data doesn’t take in to affect the speakers needing to be close to a surface. Please pay attention to the titles otherwise you will get confused as to what is going on. The title of each graph tells you how the settings were made. Then I tested it with the EQ in-line, with a few different setting configurations.
